The New Caldera| The Restless Venture | The Edwardian Picnic | The Big I Am - @ The Zanzibar – 24/03/12

(Image: The Big I Am)
This is the second Songbook Sessions night I have been to. The first being a thoroughly enjoyable experience and opened my eyes to a few of the more popular bands doing the rounds right now before they had gained their well deserved popularity (The Grande and Ratty Little Fingers being the two that spring to mind). This monthly event is a showcase for singer/songwriters, local and from further afield. Not strictly folk, but there is a certain ‘folkiness’ to the night and an undercurrent present in every one of the bands playing tonight…

Household namers, Evol, have done some extra good this bank holiday Monday and decided to give us treat a little sweeter than an Easter Egg…

I met the band in Lucy’s sunny flat, where they were also being filmed as part of a Liverpool Music Scene documentary. The self proclaimed Tarantino meets Disney trio filled their little practice room with the sound of a new song, but that’s all I can tell you because it’s still a secret! In the following interview we find out a little about their past and their aspirations for the future. Enjoy!

First off, I only have the CD so I have no idea what all these tracks are called! All I know is Track One is called Glass! So in the situation I have been placed in I have decided to take it upon myself to rename the other tracks Track 2, Track 3 and Track 4. I’m cocky like that…
Review: Gold Soundz @ Kazimer -16.03.12 | Preview: Gold Soundz @ Kazimer -13.04.12

Last month, a new night opened at the Kazimier – Gold Soundz. It promised to be an alternative club night, playing classic indie, rock and pop from the 80s and 90s. It could be perceived by some as a night run by those on the scene for those in the know, but I was keen to make it down, partly to support friends but also out of curiosity and an interest in seeing something different on the musical landscape. I was early and the venue was pretty empty but it quickly got busy and as time wore on, any scenester fears dissolved. Overall, it felt like one of the most inclusive and welcoming nights of many I’ve been to at the Kazimier…

I’ve been speaking to talented Liverpool singer/songwriter Joe Symes about his music, his influences, his world wide notoriety and also some of the gigs he’s got lined up this year. Joe, not only writes his own material he also plays almost everything on his songs except for the drums which are played by Colin White. Joe has been a big hit on American radio stations. He was also included in a Mexican radio music Hall of Fame along side bands like New Order. Joe’s music has been well received by both listeners and concert goers. He’s about to follow up the Time Waits For No One EP with another 3 track offering Where Do I Belong which is out around the 26th March…
Los Campesinos + Tall Ships + Vasco da Gama @ Liverpool O2 Academy

LOS CAMPESINOS, with their merry-go-round of members, are in Liverpool tonight to showcase material from their new album ‘Hello Sadness’. There’s a decent turnout for the darlings of the UK twee-pop scene, but VASCO DA GAMA’s 7:30pm slot means they can only count on modest support…
MASHEMON EP LAUNCH - Saturday 17.03.12 @ Lomax

For someone who usually gets his gigs reviewed, I jumped at the chance when asked by ManGone Music to do the reviewing. It was also an opportunity to hide away from the people in funny hats and Guinness T-Shirts….

As you will all know by now, the long awaited shortlist for the GIT Awards has been announced.
But with the genres being so varied and the music coming from different crowds, I know a lot of you maybe wondering who half the folk are! Just who are they??…

Liverpool’s answer to the Mercury Prize, The GIT Award, has unveiled the much anticipated shortlist of 12 bands who will be in with a chance of taking the prize home…

IF… I were to say ManGone had a double stage in Liverpool’s city centre. And IF… I were to say I was going to fill them both with some of ManGone’s favourite bands. Aaaaaand IF!… I were to say it was going to be the biggest live music birthday bash this city had ever seen… would anyone want to come?
Purely hypothetical of course…

It’s no secret that Fieldhouse are one of Liverpool’s top bands. With slots on the line ups to be on and playing the venues that the venues to play at the guys have worked thee way up the local food chain. Today is a big day in the Fieldhouse calendar as they release their new 5 track EP, ‘This Is Blitzkreig’, on Itunes and Spotify.

I hitch onto the track Conjecture and Astrology and immediately I am lazing on a balmy evening on La Rambla listening to the soothing distinctive vocal that is Simon Gibbons. Not being a particular fan of all things solo and acoustic, I am quickly being courted into a musical partnership that is guaranteed to change my perspective. Singer/songwriter Simon clearly has his feet firmly placed in grabbing the attention of the listener and demanding they pay attention…

After a solid performance from The Albany back in January at The Zanzibar I’ve had the opportunity to dig a little deeper into the raucous mix of genres and influences that fuel their sound. We talked through the band’s roots and progression, from sunglassed drunken failure to dazzling success. Though they’ve yet to see their name in lights, they certainly have come a long way in their time on stage and off…
Mouse Outfit @ Kazimier - 10.03.12

It turns out there wasn’t a fedora and flapper dress sale down Seel Street on Friday night; it was just Speakeasy’s first birthday at the Kazimier. The 1930’s theme night had its audience doll up in prohibition wear for a night of fine rap. More gangster than gangsta, if you will…
