Review: Gold Soundz @ Kazimer -16.03.12 | Preview: Gold Soundz @ Kazimer -13.04.12

Last month, a new night opened at the Kazimier – Gold Soundz. It promised to be an alternative club night, playing classic indie, rock and pop from the 80s and 90s. It could be perceived by some as a night run by those on the scene for those in the know, but I was keen to make it down, partly to support friends but also out of curiosity and an interest in seeing something different on the musical landscape. I was early and the venue was pretty empty but it quickly got busy and as time wore on, any scenester fears dissolved. Overall, it felt like one of the most inclusive and welcoming nights of many I’ve been to at the Kazimier…
Local band Vasco da Gama (playing as Vasco da Gold Soundz) opened the night with a set of covers which went down really well and provided a taster of what was to come. Following the band, DJs Andrew Ellis, Kirsten Barry, Faye Wray, Jazzy Jade and Phil Bakstad took over on rotation, playing an impressively varied set of lesser known songs and total anthems from a huge range of artists. Checking the list of songs I noted down it includes The Breeders, Talking Heads, En Vogue, Nine Inch Nails, Hole, Huggy Bear, Betty Boo, The Pixies and Whitney Houston. In anyone’s book, that’s an impressive mix! I ended up dancing and singing to songs I knew and really getting into the songs I didn’t.
Unfortunately I slipped away before the end of the night and ended up missing an impressive a capella rendition of Gangstas Paradise which rounded off proceedings. Several videos leaked out after the event to provide evidence…. I can imagine being there, the music finished, lights up, echoes of bouncers shouting “lads, girls, finish your drinks now”. It seems like a perfect spontaneous ending to a night filled with unexpected pleasures and neglected musical gems.
It was a fantastic event and the good news is organiser and DJ Andrew Ellis announced details for Gold Soundz II just a few days after the first outing. If you like any of the music of the 80s or 90s, get yourself down to the Kazimier on 13th of April open a can of Red Stripe and get stuck in. You will not regret it.
Gold Soundz II, featuring Leeds rock trio Cowtown and DJs Andrew Ellis, Kirsten Barry, Faye Wray, Jazzy Jade & Phil Bakstad. Kazimier, Friday 13th of April, £4.
