Alpha Male Tea Party chose to hold their album launch in the Caledonia pub, or more specifically a tiny little room above the pub. It did get a bit cramped towards the end of the night but the intimate atmosphere that resulted was more than worth it.

One thing I was pleased to see on arrival was the presence of some serious amplification. Most of the night’s festivities consisted of instrumental rock music and so all of the sound came straight from the drums and out of the stacks. There was a makeshift PA set up for what little vocals there were. It’s becoming increasingly rare these days that rock bands use amplitudes of over a hundred watts and instead play through the PA systems of established venues, which oh so often make the guitars too quiet. The DIY ethic and provisional stage set up displayed on this night was a throwback to simpler times.

First band on were Kusangi, a four piece instrumental rock act made up of two guitars, bass, drums and a little bit of synth. The band’s music employs hypnotic repetitive guitar melodies and plays on the contrasts between loud, quiet, light and heavy. The more relaxed segments served as a palette cleanser before you’re catapulted back into another blisteringly intense raga. The influence of Mogwai was predominantly evident. It’s interesting to note that the guitars didn’t use that much distortion; during the heavy parts the force was built up by interlocking arpeggio melodies and the only real fuzz was on the bass. Although Kusangi’s music was engaging most of the band remained static during the performance, and without a frontman to look at I was surprised to find that the drummer was the star of the show. As well as having extremely adequate technical ability he hit the drums with the vigour of a Dave Grohl sending sticks, and sometimes bits of cymbal, flying.

Alright The Captain were another instrumental ensemble, this time with just three members. The lack of distortion in the band before was more than made up for here and their music stayed more on the high-speed and heavy side of the scale. Alright The Captain were also altogether more animated then Kusangi with a head banging bassist and hooded guitarist bouncing around the stage area. There were no keys in this band but the guitar was often supplemented within OK Computer style phaser effect. It was all very exciting to watch but by the end of the set it began to feel a little repetitious and I was yearning for some variation. It would be pointless to suggest that the group would be better off with a lead singer, because accessibility is clearly not what they’re going for, but their minimal range of sounds seems to be restrictive of their ability.

Before our headliners appeared there was a quick break for a tombola competition which was presented by an android and included prizes such as Disney’s Cars eau de cologne, a DVD about trains and a portrait of a full English breakfast.

By the time Alpha Male Tea Party came on the tiny room was packed out and the cold air outside caused the windows to steam up. There was very little room to manoeuvre but you could just about catch a glimpse of the band dressed up in different coloured spandex suits which gradually got disposed of as the heat built up throughout the night. Alpha Male’s music is probably best described as ‘instrumental rock with singing’ because there’s a verse thrown in every five minutes or so but the real meat of their set is the excellent riffs they produce. One easy comparison to make is Rage Against The Machine, especially when their bassist is providing shouty vocals. The guitarist’s vocal contribution in contrast is a lot more melodic, although for the most part the feeble PA system was barely audible over the rock ‘n’ roll, not that it mattered an iota. It was a great show and from the banter between songs the guys seemed to have an excellent relationship with their audience. The little space left in the room indicated that the band may have underestimated the

success of the night and perhaps they could have set their sights on a larger venue. Then again that would of course be at the expensive of the cosy atmosphere.

From the sounds of it Alpha Male Tea Party’s album is a winner so go and have a listen.

So there it is. It’s been and gone. An incredible night that lived up to and surpassed all expectations!! The GIT Awards! The line up was incredible and the diversity shown on stage in terms of genres, styles and personalities was amazing. It’s great to the city showcased in such a way…

At the end of the night it was Loved Ones who took home the first ever GIT Award. Go Loved Ones!!

The atmospheric indie electronic folk phenomenon played their set in the first half of the show and blew the crowds away with the superb craftmanship of their music. Whilst walking around and talking to people it was clear that Loved One’s had made an impression and they were always going to be a main contender so there was little surprise when they nabbed the award.

The Loved One’s crew consists of Nik Glover (Seal Cub Clubbing Club), Richard Hurst (The Laze, Arthur Shelton Jones), Jay Freeman and Ben Shooter and have been making waves not only locally but nationally too. With national press all over these guys I’m sure they’ll just get stronger and stronger.

The nominees are made up of Bang On, Ex-Easter Island Head, Forest Swords, Loved Ones, Miss Stylie, Mugstar, Outfit, Ninetails, Bill Ryder-Jones, Stealing Sheep, The Tea Street Band and Esco Williams were chosen by a panel consisting of figure heads from all over the world of music (and football?). NME, Evol, Guardian Music and LFC are among just a few of the establishments that chose the line up and who will be there tomorrow night amongst the shinaniniganigans.

The after show party will bring a whole host of DJs such as Chew Disco, The Waxxx DJs, Ladytron, plus fresh new faces on the block, promoters, Deep Hedonia. The actual Award itself was created by the Royal Standard director, Sam Venables, but every nominee will be given a special GIT momento created by MILK Studios based on Bold Street.

I’ve heard a few reactions to this event and a some people aren’t as enthusiastic about the idea than others but at the end of the day it is something to give our musical talent to aim towards. There was no goal in our city for local bands and no rewards to motivate them further. And with the national press the awards have been getting, maybe getting a GIT could one be a stepping stone to stardom! Plus, on a less dramatic note, the night itself is a good excuse to get the whole music scene wasted under one roof. Nights like this don’t come to often!

Pinkunoizu - 25.04.12 (Tomorrow!!)

w/ Muto Leo & Clang Boom Steam @ Shipping Forecast 7pm - 25.04.12

Miss Jaleh Negari, Mr Jeppe Brix, Sir Andreas Pallisgaard and Dr Jakon Falgren are a few pals who roll by the name Pinkunoizu! As part of the Harvest Sun promotions 2012 listings, Shipping Forecast will be playing host to to Pinkunoizu’s Liverpool leg of their tour which, for me, gets a two thumbs up.

Psychedelic indie in style and a sound not too dissimilar to MGMT (but with a little extra depth) are but only two of the mass pros the shadily cool Pinkunoizu have going for them. Just have listen to ‘Parabolic Delusions’ and you’ll be stirred in to an almost hallucinogenic world of indie guitars, beats and vocals. Hailing from Copenhagen, these guys have come along way and it’s not to chillax. Pinkunoizu want to Part(a)y with an “AY”

Pinkunoizu - Parabolic Delusions from verstaerker on Vimeo.

Support comes from everyone’s favourite’s, Muto Leo. Doing the rounds on the good gigs in town and after not long releasing their latest EP, expect a whole load of new tracks, instrumental glory and music so exciting you’ll get sweaty from just witnessing foursome. Take a listen to a live recording of ‘Glass’, a track that’s been getting juices going and hairs tingling. Or even check out the ManGone review of their latest EP here. Enjoy…

And now for something completely different… A band I have only just been introduced to but a band I will be listening a lot more to in the immediate future. Clang Boom Steam sound like they’ve stepped right out of a Quentin Tarantino film. Think Johnny Cash if he was alive now and remixed by someone like Jack White are someone of the sort. Well worth a listen. Well worth a pop down to the show!

I can’t find any videos and you cant embed their soundcloud tracks but take the time to go explore the folks here: soundcloud.com/clangboommusic

Tickets are £6 from Probe Records on School Lane or The Music Consortium on Bold St. Or if your a lazy ass you can get them them online at Ticketweb here: http://tiny.cc/40oubw

Oceanis - Five like minded individuals, obsessed with creating music that is bold, new, heavy and dynamic. This melting pot of technical metal, rock and post hardcore serves to both bludgeon and sooth the listener at the same time…

‘In the current climate of pay to play, pay to apply and voting systems for gig slots, Snub will be providing a non-judgemental outlet for local talent. We will be showcasing said talent every month at the mighty Lomax, Cumberland Street. The Lomax has recently returned to the fore-front of the cities music scene. After a decade, the original building has been re-opened by Frank Hedges (T2F) and his team. The venue is back providing a much needed platform for emerging local bands.’

After the huge success of our February Metal snub, we have invited Oceanis back to headline April’s Metal showcase for thier EP Launch. If you appreciate Metal, then Oceanis are a band you HAVE to see live.

The five like-minded individuals are obsessed with creating music that is bold, heavy and dynamic. Their melting pot of technical metal, rock and post hardcore serves to both bludgeon and sooth the listener at the same time.

The energy these guys have on stage is fantastic. They engage audiences with their humour and their stage presence is phenomenal. They are enthusiastic, professional and conscientiousness (who else would print copies of their latest single to give away for FREE?!). Liverpool have embraced the band and it won’t be long before the rest of the country do as well.

Local lads The Day Will Come and Manchester’s Fed To The Ocean will also join the bill, bringing their joint mini tour. Both provide a mixture of ambient chord-work, catchy riffs, slamming breakdowns and grooves.

Hardcore Wirral lads The Riverside, Melodic Death players Lazarus Syndrome and new guys Damp Old Man (who had their first ever show with us in March and kicked fucking arse) complete the bill.

£3, 5 of the best metal bands in Liverpool. 18+, see you at the front.

(Image: Andy Cowen by Scarlet Tone)

I don’t mean it as an insult when I say that Scarlet Tone is not exactly unique. You can go to just about any city in the country, from London to Manchester, Birmingham to Leeds, and I guarantee you can find nights just like it when you get there – provided you know where to look. Up and down the country people are gathering in quiet pubs somewhere between the city centres and the suburbs and listening to the local talent ply their trade on acoustic guitars…

Some of them are bands taking their new songs out for a road test, others are weekend warriors who’ve promised to play their mum’s favourite song, and you’ll always find a few old staples of the folk scene playing about their fifth gig of the week, and possibly their second or third of the night. If they’re lucky, sometimes the bar will turn off the TV that hangs over their heads at the end of the bar. Tonight, however, we have a repeating DVD of Donald Duck cartoons to keep us entertained should we drift off from the main event.

Invariably, these sorts of nights are presided over by a smallish man in thick black glasses and short-cropped brown hair (who may or may not have a BA degree in Events Management from the University of Somewhere) who will smile pleasantly as he potters around, tweaking volume pots on the sound desk and shaking hands with the acts. Step forward, Matt Swift – the man behind, in front of and more or less woven throughout Scarlet Tone. I wonder if you’ll know what I mean when I say he looks exactly like the kind of guy you always see in wedding photographs. He takes the opportunity of the sound-check to strum out a few chords from Green Day’s Good Riddance before introducing tonight’s first act.

Dominic Dunn is a 15-year-old kid from Kirkdale (who, incidentally, gets a bit irked if you balls up his introduction and tell everyone he’s from Kirkby). When I was his age, I was also hanging out in pubs with musicians, but I suspect for slightly different reasons. His set gets off to a bit of a shaky start, but it may just be nerves. Soon enough he seems comfortable, at ease, strangling a dreamy pop sound from his stubborn guitar.

(Image: Dominic Dunn by Scarlet Tone)

He starts off mainly alternating between originals and covers, but by the end of it he seems to have run out of his own stuff and ploughs on instead with a couple of radio hits. Run by Snow Patrol, Female of the Species by Space – frankly, I’m hoping to hear a few more Songs by Dominic Dunn. The kid’s clearly talented enough, the material he has is strong, and he seems to give himself more license to play around with them than with the covers. I put it down to teenage shyness, but hopefully he’ll get over it soon and start playing the way he knows he can.

After Dunn finishes up (and quickly disappears – I’m told for another gig he has in half an hour), Matt Swift pops back on stage for a quick song between acts. He solemnly reminds us about the upcoming anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, while above his head Scrooge McDuck swan-dives into a pile of money. Unperturbed, he plays a genuinely affecting song about the tragedy, 96 Souls, asking for a minute of silence afterwards, which we all observe.

The second act proper, Steve Khan, is possibly the best guitarist of the night. He is also by far the unluckiest. He plays a great set mostly of covers (including two brilliant John Martyn numbers), but is plagued by guitar problems. His guitar doesn’t stay in tune. When he gets it in tune, it slips back out mid-song. The guitar he borrows to replace it is far too quiet, which takes the length of another song to sort out. The strap keeps getting in his way. These and a million other little things mar his performance. I don’t really want to go on, because he was a great musician, and I would hate to judge him on this night alone. Catch him on a better night at his regular gig at The Cornmarket opposite The Slaughterhouse.

(Image: Steve Khan by Scarlet Tone)

Next up is The Fire in the Forest Collective, or what’s left of them. Down from a full band of seven to just two guitarists/singers, and playing their first gig as such, it would be unfair to say the band has been cut down. More like distilled, streamlined. They may not be capable of producing the same racket they once did, but it’s hard to deny that the songs in their new form have a certain clarity of purpose injected into them. Ones to watch.

Karl McCann is one of those faces you will recognise if you spent a lot of time at the old Masque, particularly during the Dry Bar years. A bit of a dark horse, he plays guitar in a way that’s become quite standard in alt. rock when done with an electric guitar, but that I guessed wouldn’t have worked with just a single acoustic. Turns out I was wrong. With his weird guitar style and soft, high humming voice, he’s strangely off-kilter, but cool and controlled. I’m not entirely sure how to take him. I suppose that’s kind of the point.

(Image: Karl McCann by Scarlet Tone)

Sunday Jones are a fairly infectious pop-rock trio, tonight comprising two guitars and a lonely snare drum. Their songs have been featured, so I’m told, on TV and adverts, and they’re signed to a New York record label. But to me, they just sound like a bit of a standard, poppy pub-rock band. Maybe that’s the kind of thing that works for TV and adverts, but it’s a bit difficult to find much to love about it, to really sink your teeth into. Their whole set is played well, sold well, received well. But ultimately it just feels like they’re going through the motions, another day at the office. There’s no struggle in it.

Last up is Andy Cowan, who suffers from a similar problem. He’s an accomplished guitarist, a talented singer, and… nope, that’s about it. I don’t want to say anything too mean about him, because he seems like a nice enough guy. His music just doesn’t mean anything to me – it doesn’t say anything to me. It’s pleasant noise, inoffensive sound, the kind of thing you might hear playing behind a kiss-in-the-rain scene on The OC or something. But like that show, it lacks depth and humanity, and what it has in its place is some crude caricature of it.

Forest Collective with ManGone reviewer, Mr Michael O’Farrell, himself by Scarlet Tone)

The night is over, and Matt thanks us all again for coming along. The words are barely out of his mouth before he’s deconstructing the mic stand. Matt Swift: singer/songwriter/promoter/roadie/activist. When I step back out into Allerton Road, it’s just past midnight, and I’m about one wrong turn away from suburbia. There are nights like this all across the country, if you know where to find them. And if you want to.

The Staves @ Kazimier‏ Tonight!! (18.04.12)

The Staves. Dead Cities & more. @ Kazimier Liverpool (18.04.12)

Evol and Mellowtone team up to bring you and the Kazimier a three piece folk band by the name of The Staves…

Made up of Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor the girls have been throwing out their incredible harmonies since they were kids! Vocally there is a little resemblence to Eliza Doolittle with three mouths at times. To some people that might sound like hell but it is mesmerizing. The girls were brought up on the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles and Stills & Nash. B-E-A-utiful… New tracks are up on Spotify now!!

Providing main support are Liverpool faves Dead Cities, another 3 piece folk band. This time made up by the likes of Martin Stilwell, Oli Hughes, Ryan Wyatt. There’s more of an indie twist to Dead Cities music than that of The Staves. It’s the kind of music that wouldn’t be out of place on the Burberry Acoustic Ep…

Also on the bill is 17 year old Pip Mountjoy who is currently on the BBC introducing programme. She’s down from Richmond and the Beaten Tracks DJs from the top of Bold Street, Richie Vegas & Jonnie O’Hare will be down there too!

In true Mellowtone nature this night will be a strong, up on our feet folk night. Tickets £8. Doors open at 8pm. Find full details on the poster and event page below.

The first thing that needs to be said is that the Shipping Forecast is usually defined by excellent sound and a rather tame audience. On this night however the vocals were a little quiet…

I find increasingly often these days that the local support acts which featured lowest down the bill were the ‘surprise’ highlights of the night and this gig wasn’t an exception. First band on were Stero Virgins, a four piece rock band with an old school grungey sound. The night’s theme seemed to be heterogeneous in gender and so Stereo Virgins were made up of two boys and two girls. In the interests of objectivity I should point out that this reviewer has a soft spot for Queens of the Stone Age related bands and female vocalists so this group hit upon both requirements.

The first two songs of the set had a kind of shoe gaze sound supplemented by the ginger lead guitarist playing spacey notes through a Jazzmaster. It was when he switched to a Les Paul that things really took off and the sound became heavy and deep like Kyuss. Because they were first on, Stereo Virgins perhaps didn’t get the audience they deserved and they were the only proper rock band all night. The only fault I can pick out is that maybe the band’s style was a little too close to Queens for them too really pull off anything original; even the guitarist’s solos were pretty close to Josh Homme’s. Open strings detuned to C are unmistakably QOTSA and the variation of having a girl singing only served to make them sound similar to the Desert Sessions’ PJ Harvey collaborations.

Next up were Evelyn. Is, a local group who played the Shipping Forecast not too long ago supporting We Were Promised Jetpacks. They were back with an almost identical set beginning with a minimalist piece consisting of cymbals, harp and a backing track. It’s always impressive to see someone play harp while they sing but the combination of that and reverb-swamped vocals is a device dangerously similar to Florence and the Machine. The rest of the set consisted of professionally-tight atmospheric rock which sounded pretty domesticated standing next to grit of the Stero Virgins. From what I gather, the band were playing their first gig with a brand new drummer who seemed to fit in seamlessly. EI’s real strength is their tall, barefooted lead singer who is able to summon a vast stage presence with seemingly no effort at all.

Judging by appearances Deaf Club were the youngest band of the night so I feel as if I should cut them some slack. Their line up was similar to the rest of the bands on and so was their sound: a guitar-playing female lead singer resonating of shoegazey delayed guitar notes. In terms of musicianship and presentation it was all perfect, which was what was so wrong about it. There were no stand out tracks or unique selling points. Deaf Club are a group of talented individuals playing extremely safe music. Interestingly, there were a few glimpses of the vitality that was lacking on the couple of tracks which featured the drummer playing eighths on the floor tom. Maybe something as simple as that bass-y driving force is all that the music needs; the band may be well advised to employ a mid-toned rhythm guitar rather than have both instruments playing jangled riffs.

I couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed by the Bristolian headline act 2:54. If you went on some of the videos they’ve released on YouTube you might be drawn into believing that the band are a heavier, more rock-orientated alternative to a girl-group like Warpaint. Unfortunately this didn’t quite manifest itself on stage. The lead guitar was the best thing about the music and was well varied; some songs were chugged out sixteenths, others octaves or shoegaze jangles. However, the ‘heavy factor’ was missing and the guitars were drowned out by the drums and bass guitar, which took a leaf out of the Pixies’ book of straight forward one-note-per-chord rhythms.

There seems to be two vocal schools within the current trend for female-fronted rock bands, either the Florence Welch wail or the Kim Gordon style drawl. 2:54 are in the latter camp. What it was that really set this group apart from the other bands was the quality of presentation. It may be said in general that touring bands are better dressed than local support acts, perhaps even that bands from the South dress better than those from the North. This detail may strike you as irrelevant but certainly part of a headline band’s appeal is their exotic appearance and 2:54 looked the part. Their stage presence was also far superior with the lead singer sporting a certain brand of grungey lipsticked sneer which hasn’t been seen since Catatonia or Garbage.

Whether through practice or sheer attitude the band where just a lot more fun to watch. The only problem is that despite these surface qualities the music just wasn’t anything special. The rock and roll romanticism evoked by their appearance is purely superficial, and while 2:54’s sound is a hell of a lot more authentic than the sewage that’s been polluting the charts in recent years it isn’t altogether too different from an array of smaller bands populating every city in the UK, most of whom cost less to go and see live.

Harvest Sun presents alt indie poppers, Sea of Bees. Creation of musical mastermind, Julie Ann Bee, Sea of Bees give indie an easier more fun poppy edge with their simple structured songs and enjoyable vocals…

The guys have got a few new releases to be show cased tonight (15.04.12) which should be a real treat for our local Sea of Bees fans. Great headliners with a great set. If you haven’t heard them then what are you doing?? Check out their track ‘Broke’ below to get an idea of what they’re like!

Supporting those cool cats are a band a lot of you will be familiar with, Stealing Sheep. These guys are going from success to success with the accalade of being one of the first ever Liverpool GIT Award Nominees. They could even possibly be the firs winners! But we’ll have to wait until the 27th to hear about that. For y’all who don’t know, Stealing Sheep are a local three piece who make real good music with a strong Emiliana Torrini styled sound to them. Amazing vocals. Definitely not ones to miss…

Representing the guys will be acousticly driven Ivan Campo. This fella has a European sound to his chord progressions and his finger picking is borderline exotic at time. For some strange reason he reminds of a British busker on a Spanish street but I might be far in comparison to what you get from his songs. Have a lobe full…

So where’s all this happening? Sea Of Bees @ Leaf on Bold Street w/ Stealing Sheep | Ivan Campo - 7.30pm, 15.04.12. Full details here: http://www.facebook.com/events/331198220262952/

A double blessing came from the Thurlow family. Sisters, Hannah and Colette, aka the 2:54 are play Shipping Forecast tomorrow eve (13.04) down to the local promoters you all know and love, Evol. Shoegazy vibes and XXish tones fill the ear drums with a real contradictory feeling of a laid backness and an on edge feel that takes you by the torso and consumes your miiiiind!!…

The girls have just signed to two labels who currently cater for the likes of those Crystal Castles and them Black Keys, ensuring their upcoming album a good footing on the success ladder. These guys are gonna be massive! Some guys called Wild Beasts have been banging on about ‘em for agesss so be a hipster for the night (or carry on being so) and see them before the radio knows them. It’ll make you cool.

Support comes from the perfectly complimenting Deaf Club with their haunting vocals and moody inner cave like, echoey, electric guitaral cries. They are the kind of musical crew you introduce your partner to just to make it look like you know your shit. Even if you’re single they are something to enjoy your much envied freedom to. Get on ‘em.

Because we is a local city we have a local offering on the line up. Evelyn. Is, fronted by Bittany Hayes, will be showing the big shots how we get down and atmospherical in Liverpool town. In similar fashion, Evelyn. Is brings us music that enters the ears and fills the soul with what they describe as ” an effortless blend of bittersweet nuance and sonic kicks”.

Finally on the list of names is another local manifestation in the form of the hard hitting Stereo Virgins. On the rockier side of the atmospheric fence, these guys bring the night an extra edge with guitar solos that screech through the back of your neck and grate through your chest.

The show starts at 8pm and is 18+. Tickets £7adv via www.seetickets.com and www.ticketweb.co.uk.

Below my feet the sounds of a busy bar were muffled, a reminder that the world outside was still there. Something had to be there otherwise the sound of Silent Cities would have made the audience forget something else existed outside of this intimate venue. Simon Maddison, singer/songwriter took to the stage first, in what was going to be a demonstration in what the Liverpool folk scene had to offer…

With just a guitar in his hand Simon played through a strong set, quintessential of what the folk sound could produce. All These Winds arguably the best piece he played that night. The song played through with a catchy yet sophisticated finger picking melody, that worked beautifully with an interesting and evocative voice. Silence descended over the crowd as the song started to its end, followed by loud applause. Although at times the lyrics were original and flowed really well, they bordered on the cliché occasionally which let the song down. Such as the folk scene demands it’s lyrics to tell a story, this area could use some work.

Saying this there was no argument that there were moments of genius in his songs. Haptonic was another gem in the set, which showed just as much originality and skill in Simon’s guitar playing. ‘Keeping face whilst in your bed/ in a sea of apathy/ no ones going to sail along with me/’ just one of the few lines that spark off interesting images in the listeners head. Lyrically the songs can be just as deep and profound as anything anyone can hear off the shelves. It may be nip picking to say it needs tightening up, but as show of great song writing feels like it should be consistent throughout.

Silent Cities presents himself as a poster child to the growing talent coming from the local folk scene. Simon showed that he can put on just as good as a show as the headliners Paper Aeroplanes. Definitely a solo artist with a lot of raw talent, that with some fine tuning could be something to keep a very close eye on.

(Image: The Big I Am)

This is the second Songbook Sessions night I have been to. The first being a thoroughly enjoyable experience and opened my eyes to a few of the more popular bands doing the rounds right now before they had gained their well deserved popularity (The Grande and Ratty Little Fingers being the two that spring to mind). This monthly event is a showcase for singer/songwriters, local and from further afield. Not strictly folk, but there is a certain ‘folkiness’ to the night and an undercurrent present in every one of the bands playing tonight…

The bill was a busy one and as is traditional for me, I was fashionably late. My hectic, rock and roll lifestyle has a lot to answer for! (I really wish I had a rock and roll lifestyle, it was more like – rush home from work, bite to eat then straight down to the Zanzi). Stepping out the limo (Delta cab), I swaggered in with my entourage of hangers on and groupies (erm, my sister and best mates) to see The New Caldera setting up. Many many moons ago I used to share a rehearsal room with a band called Iconoclast. The New Caldera is the new home of their drummer and bass player, the rest of the band coming from various set ups from around the city over the years. Beer bought, vantage point reached, let the show go on.

The New Caldera are your typical indie rock band, but with years of experience and technical talent under their belt. Their roots are firmly placed in blues and country style rock, with that familiar scouse vocal that has been made famous over the years by loads of Liverpool bands such as The La’s, The Coral, and the resurging Cast. It was refreshing to see a band like this. A few years ago this type of band were ten a penny but nowadays they are a dying breed. Perhaps there is going to be an uprising? Let’s hope so. The New Caldera have obviously worked hard on their harmonies and use them to great effect. What really stood out for me was the relationship between the two guitarists, Tom Crofts and Mick Marshall. These boys are clearly masters of their craft and complimented each other and the rest of the band in a sort of understated way. That is, they didn’t overplay as is so often the case in guitar based bands, but you still walked away thinking about all the little intricacies between the two and a greater respect for this type of playing.

(Image: The Restless Venture)

Next up, The Restless Venture. A band I haven’t heard of before. A four piece hailing from various north westerly suburbs around Liverpool and Manchester. Without much to go on it was with tentative ears that I moved closer to the front to try and grab a piece of the action. Action, being a word to describe movement of some kind, well this band can certainly move. Sounding not too distant from a fresh faced Feeder, punchy, bright and crunchy distorted guitars are what drive this bands sound. It’s that quintessential British sounding Britpop/rock sound that did the rounds at the turn of the century. Fast, loud and confidently cocky. These boys are definitely into this genre and clearly have a lot of fun making music of this style. One to watch peeps.

For me, the next band are one of the finest at their craft. The Edwardian Picnic only did their first gig a few months ago and I have watched as these boys and girls nurture their stage presence and grow as a live act since their debut. How can I describe these? It would be easy to just label them as nu-folk, but I don’t think that does them justice. Upbeat and amusing onstage, they are a folk band who don’t take themselves too seriously. Think Mumford and Sons but having more of a laugh. Their songs are inspiring and lead vocalist Phil Collier is as much part of the background as he is frontman. Making you divert you eyes in many directions and smile in awe at the many talents present on stage. Now this wasn’t the best I have ever seen these guys. Some of the vocals were a bit off and in places they lacked that certain energy I am always banging on about. Everyone has a bad night though and you can’t be perfect everytime. The Edwardian Picnic are one of the finest new talents in the city at the moment and I would urge everyone who reads this to get down and see them before you can’t.

(Image: The Edwardian Picnic by Dave Forbes)

Sorry, never got to see The Big I Am due to pre arranged antics. The Zanzibar has a habit of letting bands over run and that has the downside of being a headline act who, more often than not will take stage after midnight. Ok if you are big enough to fill the venue with your own fans but if you are relying on the other bands fans for a bit of exposure then this is usually a hindrance as most people have already moved on to pastures new at this point. Something to think about if you are considering putting a show/gig together for the first time.

Thomas J Speight - TONIGHT!! - 09.04.12

@ Shipping Forecast - £6

Household namers, Evol, have done some extra good this bank holiday Monday and decided to give us treat a little sweeter than an Easter Egg…

Sounding like he could be Bruce Springsteen’s nephew with a hint of American doorstep folk, Thomas J Speight covers all necessary points you need from a cool laid back spring gig. Despite it being grey outside right now Speight’s music brings a warmth to the soul and a burst of sunlight to the heart and just generally makes you feel like your riding through Summer American meadows in your dad’s old drop top Cadillac. Well at least that’s what I get from ‘This House’.

There’s a definite Damien Rice tone to some of Thomas J Speight’s songs and a depth that only well crafted songs can bring. His tracks are full of nostalgic feeling love stories that girls die for and guys pretend they don’t long for. My favourite song of his is actually nothing like that though. ‘Start As We Mean’ is a great uplifting track with a good beat with a 50’s-esque chord progression. But like I said, not nostalgic feeling!

Speight’s songs vary with the common denominator being cool, simple, heartfelt emotion. Definitely one to get down to to finish the weekend off on a high note.

I met the band in Lucy’s sunny flat, where they were also being filmed as part of a Liverpool Music Scene documentary. The self proclaimed Tarantino meets Disney trio filled their little practice room with the sound of a new song, but that’s all I can tell you because it’s still a secret! In the following interview we find out a little about their past and their aspirations for the future. Enjoy!

Who is in the band?

We have Lucy on Guitar, Louise on Bass, and Roy on the drums.

How long have you been together?

We’ve been together for about a year and a half. For the first six months we were mostly just practising, finding our sound, and this month is the one year anniversary of our first gig together! We practised for six months before our first gig because we wanted to sound good before going in front of an audience. Our first gig was in Ormskirk, we wanted to test the waters away from home, and it went very well!

Where have you played since?

We’ve played mostly around the city centre in places like the Shipping Forecast and the Kazimier, we also played in Mojo and Static Gallery before they stopped showing live music. We’ve played at a battle of the bands in Southport which was really good. We got a bus to take us there and when it showed up it was an actual Arriva bus! I guess the guy owned it, so we had an Arriva bus full of people and equipment down to Southport. I think we brought more people in the end than the local Southport bands.

How would you describe your genre or sound?

I think if we had to be labelled we’d be in the Rock/Pop section of HMV but really we have particular sound that is unique to our own type of music. It can’t really be labelled as a certain genre. We try to make music you can dance to but if you sit down and go through the lyrics it has a darker layer.

A lot of what goes into our sound is the way we harmonise. With three of us singing it’s like having another instrument and we harmonise really well together. Also the way there isn’t a particular drumming style, it’s specific to our type of music.

Who does most of the song writing?

Louise: Lucy does most of the song writing but I do write songs as well, they’re usually quite happy songs, mostly about love, which is a bit cheesy I guess.

Lucy: It’s a good thing! My songs are always darker, but Louise writes happier songs, and

they’re not cheesy! You know how you can get Aerosmith singing about love and it’s not cheesy, but if you gave the song to Celine Dion it would be very cheesy? Louise is the Aerosmith to someone’s Celine Dion.

Roy: I do write songs but none for this band yet. The songs I’ve wrote aren’t really our type of music. They’re more like metal songs. So none so far.

What are your influences?

Roy: I started out playing in a grunge band then I played in a number of other bands playing metal, got into some proper doom metal, really heavy music, and moved on to blues and other genres.

Louise: I started playing bass for a Beatles cover band which I still play in, so that has influenced my style for the most part. I like the Beatles and 60’s music generally, so mostly that.

Lucy: I’ve been writing songs since I was 15. They like a few down at the recording studios on Lark Lane so they put me in a sound booth and taught me how to program. I wouldn’t say I’ve had a very musical upbringing but the other artists coming through there must have had an effect on me.

What do you have in the pipeline for the future?

We feel like we’ve established ourselves locally now and we’ve played enough gigs to know that we can put on a good show. For next year we’re looking at taking it out of Liverpool, breaking into the music scene in Manchester and hopefully beyond, getting heard by more people in other places.

We would eventually like to be able to do it as a full time job, not have to work otherwise. For the moment it works out well for us though. We can practice in Lucy’s flat during the day when most people are out at work. Roy is currently training for the Paralympics as well as being in University part time. Louise has just finished her masters and is a mum along with being in her other band. And Lucy plays acoustic sets which is usually in the evening. So having that kind of flexibility to practice when we want is great.

We recently had an album release party in the flat which was really good. It was invite only so all the people we wanted to be there were there. Lucy hand made all the CD’s to look like little vinyl albums and drew the characters on each of them which took ages but each one is slightly different so it was worth it. I think we’ve set ourselves in a good place for this year so we’re excited to see where we go in the future!

First off, I only have the CD so I have no idea what all these tracks are called! All I know is Track One is called Glass! So in the situation I have been placed in I have decided to take it upon myself to rename the other tracks Track 2, Track 3 and Track 4. I’m cocky like that…

Let’s go deep… Track one introduces itself with an atmospheric tone, an echoey strat that sounds as if we’re stood in the midst of a twilight film (without the pansy love story) and we are being given an audio come hither finger via a vesination through the midst of a blind foggy forest. It mystifying but it doesn’t last long; drums and base hit in. A little further down the line, a riff to die for vibrates through your ears thoroughly taking you on to a higher harder deeper level of instrumental heaven. The track continues with more suprises in a clean cut, professional manner which impresses me as I’m assured the songs are recorded live.

Track two starts after a break of a second or two but unfortunately after the continuous suprises of the first song, this one sounds a little too similar. I had to check the cd player to see if this was in fact a new track. Not that it didn’t sound good. If you like the first track you’ll like the second. I think maybe if the two tracks are combined in to one long uber track then that might work a little better.

<a href=”http://mutoleo.bandcamp.com/track/glass” data-mce-href=”http://mutoleo.bandcamp.com/track/glass”>Glass by Muto Leo</a>

Wary of the third track, I’m hoping it is not another repeating similarity. Not only because I like the guys and their music and don’t want to give them a bad review but also because I believe EPs should thrive on creativity and showing off your different abilities.

Fortunately that’s exactly what happens with the third track. A hard intro that sounds nothing like anything that has gone before on the CD. Hard riff with a slow modulation bend introduces the listener in to a harder world of Muto. It starts off slowish with a build of up of subtle percussion and guitar leading us in to a track which would sound absolutely incredible on a live stage. A breakdown ensues with dream like riffs typical Muto followed by a little something that sounds a tad Californian and Summery.

Fourth track is by far my favourite. This is a darker and an even harder listenable. This track reminds me why I first fell in love with Muto. The intro is XX-esque with their kind of animal cry sounding background noises, only to be sliced by the raw wrath of something sounding Les Paul-y. They hold back no longer. Indie boy shred takes place; Drums, guitars and skinny jean passion unfolds in to the hardest moments on the track which lasts for a relatively and teasingly short space of time as they start to pack their bags for the end of the song and EP. The ending being a subtle cascading breakdown with an end that almost sounds like the guitar is saying goodbye.

If you liked the Muto’s previous stuff this is going to be right up your street. It’s a continuation of the music they have become well known for in the city and a continuation of the fiery Muto passion I first saw of them last year.

Their EP, entitled ‘Cascades’ is out tomorrow, Friday 6th April. Get down to their EP Launch at the Caledonia on Saturday the 7th. Details are on the poster and event link below.

Last month, a new night opened at the Kazimier – Gold Soundz. It promised to be an alternative club night, playing classic indie, rock and pop from the 80s and 90s. It could be perceived by some as a night run by those on the scene for those in the know, but I was keen to make it down, partly to support friends but also out of curiosity and an interest in seeing something different on the musical landscape. I was early and the venue was pretty empty but it quickly got busy and as time wore on, any scenester fears dissolved. Overall, it felt like one of the most inclusive and welcoming nights of many I’ve been to at the Kazimier…

Local band Vasco da Gama (playing as Vasco da Gold Soundz) opened the night with a set of covers which went down really well and provided a taster of what was to come. Following the band, DJs Andrew Ellis, Kirsten Barry, Faye Wray, Jazzy Jade and Phil Bakstad took over on rotation, playing an impressively varied set of lesser known songs and total anthems from a huge range of artists. Checking the list of songs I noted down it includes The Breeders, Talking Heads, En Vogue, Nine Inch Nails, Hole, Huggy Bear, Betty Boo, The Pixies and Whitney Houston. In anyone’s book, that’s an impressive mix! I ended up dancing and singing to songs I knew and really getting into the songs I didn’t.

Unfortunately I slipped away before the end of the night and ended up missing an impressive a capella rendition of Gangstas Paradise which rounded off proceedings. Several videos leaked out after the event to provide evidence…. I can imagine being there, the music finished, lights up, echoes of bouncers shouting “lads, girls, finish your drinks now”. It seems like a perfect spontaneous ending to a night filled with unexpected pleasures and neglected musical gems.

It was a fantastic event and the good news is organiser and DJ Andrew Ellis announced details for Gold Soundz II just a few days after the first outing. If you like any of the music of the 80s or 90s, get yourself down to the Kazimier on 13th of April open a can of Red Stripe and get stuck in. You will not regret it.
