Alpha Male Tea Party chose to hold their album launch in the Caledonia pub, or more specifically a tiny little room above the pub. It did get a bit cramped towards the end of the night but the intimate atmosphere that resulted was more than worth it.

You can’t really put the word ‘luxury’ to many things in our local music scene but tomorrows GIT Awards are as close as is gets up for us dirty lot. The event taking place at LEAF on Bold Street will see 10 of the 12 nominees perform and one of them take home the coveted GIT Award Prize! The invite only event will be displaying what a panel of musically inclined judges have picked as the cream of our Liverpool crop out of over 450 applicants!!

This is the second Songbook Sessions night I have been to. The first being a thoroughly enjoyable experience and opened my eyes to a few of the more popular bands doing the rounds right now before they had gained their well deserved popularity (The Grande and Ratty Little Fingers being the two that spring to mind). This monthly event is a showcase for singer/songwriters, local and from further afield. Not strictly folk, but there is a certain ‘folkiness’ to the night and an undercurrent present in every one of the bands playing tonight…

I’ve been speaking to talented Liverpool singer/songwriter Joe Symes about his music, his influences, his world wide notoriety and also some of the gigs he’s got lined up this year. Joe, not only writes his own material he also plays almost everything on his songs except for the drums which are played by Colin White. Joe has been a big hit on American radio stations. He was also included in a Mexican radio music Hall of Fame along side bands like New Order. Joe’s music has been well received by both listeners and concert goers. He’s about to follow up the Time Waits For No One EP with another 3 track offering Where Do I Belong which is out around the 26th March…

Having not heard much about this American 4 piece, I took to google before hitting Soundcloud, hard. I found that this one time solo project are mentioned in a dozen of ‘best unsigned’ features in mag’s and blogs on the other side of the pond. And that they are starting to demand attention over here too, with stalwarts Huw Stevens and Steve Lamacq showing them major love. SMW’s are at the forefront of LA’s vibrant DIY scene and will be hoping the UK falls for their nostalgic Indie pop as well…
